Ouray Colorado Fire Today: The active Gold Mountain Fire is burning just north of the City of Ouray, prompting mandatory evacuations, road closures, and a full emergency response. The wildfire ignited on the evening of June 27, 2026, after high winds blew a tree onto a power line below Gold Mountain Ranch. It is spreading rapidly uphill in steep, rugged terrain under extreme fire conditions.

The Ouray County Sheriff’s Office has issued a mandatory Evacuation Order for the following areas:
- Panoramic Heights
- Lake Lenore area
- Peck’s Trailer Park
- Red Stone Road area
- Evacuation Shelter: Anyone needing temporary shelter should go directly to the Ridgway Secondary School (1200 Green St, Ridgway, CO).

- Highway 550 is closed in both directions between Ouray and Whispering Pines due to the fire’s proximity to the northern slopes.
- Detour Route: Traffic is currently being rerouted over the Whispering Pines Bridge via County Road 17 / Oak Street and 7th Avenue in Ouray. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution.

The entire Western Slope is under a Red Flag Warning until 10:00 PM tonight due to extreme fire danger, low humidity, and high winds.
In addition to the mandatory zones, the Ouray County Sheriff’s Office placed the area from Whispering Pines to Black Lake (along County Road 17) under a Pre-Evacuation Notice. Residents there must pack a “Go Bag” and be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
Governor Jared Polis has declared a statewide emergency, activating the National Guard to support overwhelmed resources as multiple major blazes burn across the region (including the 28,000-acre Snyder-Mesa Fire on the Utah border).
