France Heatwave Update: France’s Public Health Agency Reports Over 1000 Heatwave Related Deaths; Mortality Rate Expected to Rise

France Heatwave Update: France’s public health agency recently shared that there have been over 1000 heat related deaths in the country and warned that the figure will most likely rise. Currently, there has been a temperature drop in Northern France but South of France is expected to face lingering hot and humid conditions.

France Heatwave Update: Health Agency’s Report 

Santé Publique France, the public health agency of France, which is affiliated with the health ministry, released an emergency report on heatwave deaths today. 

It reported over 1000 heat related deaths in June 2026 as a result of the ongoing heatwave, with mortuaries reaching full capacity in many areas.

Health minister Stephanie Rist claimed that the heatwave will most likely remain for next 10 days and said that the drop in temperatures this week won’t provide much relief.

France Heatwave Update: Meteo France’s Latest Forecast 

According to Meteo France, the state weather agency of France, the ‘exceptional heatwave’ will continue to affect most of the country with “a level of severity higher than that of August 2003”. 

In a more positive development, the agency has removed all red alerts but issued thunderstorm related orange and yellow alerts for many departments. Temperatures have dropped in Northern France, while sunny conditions are expected to remain in the South of France.

The following areas of France have been put on orange alert by Meteo France:

  • Alpes-Maritimes (including Nice and Cannes)
  • Var (including Toulon and Saint-Tropez)
  • Bouches-du-Rhône (including Marseille and Aix-en-Provence)
  • Vaucluse (including Avignon)
  • Corse-du-Sud & Haute-Corse (entire island of Corsica)

No areas are now on red alert, which is the most severe alert in France. While, thunderstorm alerts have been issued in following regions: 

  • Île-de-France  
  • Seine-et-Marne (77), 
  • Yvelines (78), 
  • Essonne (91), 
  • Hauts-de-Seine (92), 
  • Seine-Saint-Denis (93), 
  • Val-de-Marne (94)  
  • Val-d’Oise 
  •  Centre-Val de Loire 
  •  Centre-Val de Loire 

France Heatwave: Services Affected

Multiple services in France have been affected due to the Omega heatwave. Trains, concerts and sports events have been cancelled although the Fête de la Musique music festival was allowed to operate. 

Major tourist sites like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre museum have reduced their operating hours. 1,800 schools are currently closed while 8,000 opted to modify their schedule due to the heat. Electricity was also affected with power outages reported in over 68,000 homes. Rail services faced disruption in several parts of the country.

Amidst the ongoing heatwave, the people in France should:

  • Remain hydrated and avoid alcohol
  • Pay close attention to the elderly
  • Stay indoors during peak hours
  • Wear light, comfortable clothing
  • Look out for any signs of heatstroke or heat exhaustion
  • Keep all rooms well ventilated, especially during the day time.
